Sunday's (8/20): Conversation Starters and 8/13's Kindness

Image
Kids do what they want, here Warren won't look at the camera and smile; and look at the funny picture it made!  Overcoming Shyness and Questions to Ask The PowerofOneMultiplied only works when you're able to start a conversation with a stranger. Which can be difficult! Here are some conversation starters that I've used and have positive outcomes (in no particular order): The way to overcome shyness is to become so wrapped up in something that you forget to be afraid -Lady Bird Johnson I really like that color on you! <insert compliment: it makes your eyes pop, or it brings out the ____> I love your shoes! Where did you get that {item of clothing or jewelry}? What was the best part of your day today? What are you looking forward to the most today? What inspired you to become a ____ {nurse was my most used during recovery period} Great resources for more questions: Pinterest search for "conversation starters" Tabletopics and Q/A game

Overwhelmingly positive, Things We'll Never Talk About, Contributing, Spirituality, Sharing Has Repercussions and My Cancer Journey

Hi everyone! Dr. Ferguson, the #ToomaRemoova Dr. Ferguson, the #ToomaRemoova, I won (Most Creative Gift Ever Award - and 11+ hours of her time and dedication ) I'm officially #damienated but have not had an opportunity to talk to my medical team in great detail about how things went. Although I can say VERY well. I am out of the hospital and staying with my family in Houston for the next several days to recovery in the lap of luxury and pampering. Jeff is headed here this morning to join up with me, but my babies are going to stay in Austin for a bit because they were exposed to some pretty legit illnesses at Daycare this week (strep and pink eye) and no one in this house needs to be dealing with those two things - especially ME). so in an overabundance of caution and respect for the health and wellbeing of those around me, I made a hard decision. My Kids Because he's just the cutest most lovable 2 year old ever! Hugging on our "real"

How to Build a ToolBox (My Observations and Thoughts of My Super-Strength Powers)

Strong like bull...Me picking up my nephew Michael at his brother's high school graduation ceremony Let me start this post by stating a simple fact. I am NOT a profession mental health professional. I am merely mentioning the things I believe have contributed to me being able to have the right foundation and tools/skills to get me through this cancer diagnosis, surgery, and recovery.  I am just sharing anecdotal information and encouraging you to also explore yourselves - it's never a bad thing to get to know who you are. Ever. Your mental health is important to me and to everyone in your life. I am a certified Business Analyst, a project manager, a sales and process driven person. I have dedicated my career to a few things: If I had to summarize what my job "title" is: Senior Producer, I am responsible for securing and planning new business opportunities for Slide UX , and establishing the processes and procedures that will get us from a proposal to t

Surgery updates (check this post for updates)

7:30 PM Last update for the night - Hanna is officially out of surgery and in recovery! Her doctors said she did great - during her 3 hours of "awake" time she talked their ears off, even though she didn't have to talk as part of the test (though those of us who know her well are not surprised). Her anesthesiologist reiterated that Hanna was very strong, and deserved a lot of love and rest from all of us. She should be able to have a couple of visitors within the hour. She'll move to an in-between unit next, not the ICU and not the regular floor. She will have another MRI tomorrow, which is standard procedure. They will see her doctor for a follow up tomorrow afternoon. Any further updates will come from Hanna and her family when they are ready to share next steps and details. A quick reminder: Tomorrow is a family day for Hanna, so no visitors please. We hope she will be ready for visitors by Wednesday/Thursday, but please check in with Hanna/Jeff/Wren/Houston f

The Big Day (and a guest blogger)

Hi friends, family, friends of family, and family of friends: I am not Hanna, much as I sometimes wish I were. My name is Jenny Elder-Moke, and I am a friend of Hanna's from her Quotient days (we left the job, but kept each other). Hanna has asked me to keep the blog updated today with news of the progress of her surgery as her friend, Sarah Darby, shares it. There are so many of you out there keeping Hanna in your thoughts and prayers, and she didn't want anyone to miss out. Jeff will be sharing updates via Facebook, Sarah will be texting and emailing updates as they get them, and I will be posting those updates here on the blog. I will do my best to keep it updated throughout the day, so check back here frequently for news. Also, my hashtag game isn't anywhere near as strong as Hanna's, so forgive me for missing out on any. The important one for now is #Hanna.

Ways to Help Us and Another Perspective

You've seen this, but it was a promise to my Dr Hi everyone! I'm getting ready to head to the main building, Elevator E, 5th floor for my pre-surgery party in the waiting room! I am about to take an antibacterial bath/shower, and start hugging my kiddos. Many people have been asking how to help us. It's been heavily weighing on me because I know that you want to help, we need help, but I don't want to ask for STUFF. I really got what I needed most over the past month. Prayers, inspiration, notes of love and kindness. But because I know that's not what you meant - here are ways to help us: If you're local in Austin | Bastrop | Cedar Creek https://www.carecalendar.org/logon/257790 Calendar ID: 257790 Security Code: 6365 we'll be sharing our needs here (food, errands, etc) Other ways to help: BRAG abour your kindness, tag me in it, hash tag it #PowerOfOneMultiplied, and tell me about how you helped spread kindness, positivity, and

Friday's Update: Binders of Fun and MD Anderson is Better Than Disneyland

Image
YOU get a binder of fun, and YOU get a binder of fun! Binders, on Binders, on Binders One of my "projects" was to make binders for the parents and the "important people" in the process. I've called it the "Binder of Fun." I believe if call things "fun" it makes it so. Have you ever been asked in life, if you didn't do what you do now, what would you do? My answer is a professional organizer. Y'all, I may have taken this cancer to heart and am maximizing my opportunity to live my other profession, Professional Organizer Extraordinaire. I think I've been to Staples, Office Depot, Walmart Office Supply section at least 15 trips. I'm basically in heaven. So, binders. Let me list my binders: Dog Binder (our dogs went to long term boarding so I made a binder about their records, personalities, etc.) How to Be A H.O. (those are my initials - the guide of how to do the things I do for our family) Medical Binder (organizi

TCB, GSD, and Stopping Procrastinating Friendships

I like Elvis. Great, now I want a Chuy's Mexican Martini and some creamy jalapeno-ranch dip. Welp, that was a fun tangent. Post and it shall be. Dinner with KT and CT on Friday was at Chuy's!  What I really wanted to say was that I like Elvis. My favorite Elvis fact (a stupid piece of trivia they assure me I'll recall post surgery) is that he had a custom ring, necklace, and also the name of his band, T.C.B. I could be wrong, and I might have to sneak my iPhone under the table, but I think he also had the emblem painted on his private plane! The emblem was a lightening bold with TCB in the middle and stood for Taking Care of Business (in a flash). Red Twine moment, I learned the CT and KT also love Elvis! I'd like to officially call this the week of TCB and GSD (sorry, mom, but that one means Getting $h!t Done). And that's what's been happening at our house this week. One of the craziest parts of being diagnosed with brain cancer and having a looming

MD Anderson Bound on Friday!

I received the good news that I am scheduled for my craniotomy on Monday, August 14. I don't have a time but I'll be checking into the "Brain Suite" at some point and having my right frontal lobe removed. Oddly, this is really exciting for me? We will be driving into the Houston on Thursday night because Friday is a fully lined up with pre-op appointments. Like...filled with appointments starting at 7:45 a.m. and ending around 2:30 p.m. Very fun. Friday's appointments include things like my MRI, blood screenings, a consult with the anesthetist, and ending the day with my neuro-surgeon. We've decided that Jeff and the boys would come to Houston on Thursday and we'll be staying there through surgery and they'd come back to Austin Monday evening. I'll be in the hospital being well taken care of with our Houston family and friends visiting me throughout my in-patient recovery. I'll be at MD Anderson for a minimum of 3 days post surgery. In
